cloning resources

Cloning refers to the process of building replicas of model rockets, for which the original kits are no longer in production. Sometimes you can find the old kits for sale on ebay, but they are very expensive (valued by collectors who want to keep them sealed in the bag). If you're going to fly the rocket, it may make more sense to copy it instead of buying the original kit.

old rocket catalogs - kit list
rocket plans - part names - nose cone list
rocket parts - reproduction decals - forum

The links above are some of the resources I use most when cloning out-of-production Estes model rockets. Here's a quick overview of how to use this information:

  • First, decide on a project. You might already have something in mind, or you can look through the old Estes catalogs to get some ideas. The kit list tells you when different kits were made, and which kits were made in a particular year.
  • Look up the old kit instructions, often referred to as plans. This will give you a list of the parts you need, fin patterns, and complete instructions.
  • Refer to the part names or nose cone reference to identify any enigmatic parts codes. If your rocket plans list an SC-2 or BNC-20L, you can find out what that is using these documents.
  • Order reproduction parts from Semroc. Their parts are the most accurate, in my experience.
  • Order reproduction decals from Excelsior. Another decal maker is Tango Papa, or some people make their own. (Inkjet quality is lower than the professional decals.)
  • Decals must be coated with Microscale Liquid Decal Film. This is a fast-drying liquid that you apply with a brush. This is what holds the decal together, and it is very easy to use. Take measurements from the catalog photos to ensure accurate decal placement. Otherwise, your model will have its own unique look!
  • Once you're ready to share your project, visit Ye Olde Rocket Forum. You can also get good advice there.

A big thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to provide these amazing resources!
